As taxpayers prepare to file their income tax returns (ITRs), experts advise them to correctly calculate and report FD interest income to avoid under-reporting of income, tax demands or notices from the Income Tax Department.<\/p> <p>Although banks deduct tax at source (TDS) on eligible FD interest payments, this does not mean the income is tax-free. The interest must still be disclosed in the income tax return and taxed according to the taxpayer&#8217;s applicable income tax slab.<\/p> <p><strong>Step 1: Calculate your total FD interest<\/strong><\/p> <p>The first step is to determine the total interest earned from all fixed deposits during the financial year.<\/p> <p>Taxpayers can verify this using multiple sources, including:<\/p> <p>Bank statements or FD interest certificates.<br \/>Form 26AS.<br \/>Annual Information Statement (AIS).<br \/>Taxpayer Information Statement (TIS).<\/p> <p>Checking all these records helps ensure that no interest income is missed while filing the ITR.<\/p> <p><strong>MUST READ:\u00a0TDS deducted from salary but missing in Form 26AS? ITAT explains when the Income Tax Department can act<\/strong><\/p> <p><strong>Step 4: Adjust TDS against tax liability<\/strong><\/p> <p>Under Section 194A of the Income-tax Act, 1961, banks generally deduct 10% TDS on eligible FD interest once the prescribed threshold is crossed.<\/p> <p>The TDS reflected in Form 26AS or AIS can be claimed as tax credit while filing the ITR.<\/p> <p>If the taxpayer&#8217;s slab rate is higher than 10%, additional tax may have to be paid.
