The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has invoked\u00a0Stage-III (\u201cSevere\u201d category)\u00a0of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) across Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) following a steady deterioration in air quality and forecasts pointing to further worsening conditions.\u00a0<\/p>
In an order issued on\u00a0January 16, 2026, the CAQM said Delhi\u2019s Air Quality Index (AQI) showed a rising trend and was recorded at\u00a0354, with projections by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) indicating that pollution levels could soon slip into the\u00a0severe\u00a0category due to unfavourable weather conditions, low wind speeds and poor dispersion.\u00a0<\/p>
Considering the prevailing air quality scenario, the Sub-Committee on GRAP decided to implement\u00a0all actions under Stage-III, in addition to the measures already in force under\u00a0Stage-I and Stage-II, with immediate effect across the entire Delhi-NCR.\u00a0<\/p>
What is restricted under GRAP-III<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p> Stage-III of GRAP, which comes into force when AQI levels are in the\u00a0401-450 (Severe)\u00a0range, mandates a series of emergency curbs aimed at reducing emissions and limiting public exposure to pollution.\u00a0<\/p> Construction & dust control<\/em>\u00a0<\/p> Vehicle & transport restrictions<\/em>\u00a0<\/p> Industrial activity<\/em>\u00a0<\/p> Schools & public advisory<\/em>\u00a0<\/p> The CAQM emphasised that GRAP is an emergency response mechanism and will override other relaxations wherever applicable to prevent further deterioration in air quality.\u00a0<\/p> AQI slumps to ‘very poor’ category<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p> According to data from the\u00a0Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), air quality across Delhi-NCR remained in the\u00a0\u2018very poor\u2019 category\u00a0on January 16, with several monitoring stations reporting AQI readings above 300. Weather conditions, including dense fog and low wind speeds, have further aggravated pollution levels by limiting the dispersion of pollutants.\u00a0<\/p> Under CPCB norms, AQI values between\u00a0301 and 400\u00a0fall under the\u00a0very poor\u00a0category, while readings between\u00a0401 and 500\u00a0are classified as\u00a0severe, posing serious health risks to the general population.\u00a0<\/p> The CAQM said all concerned agencies across Delhi-NCR have been directed to strictly implement, monitor and intensify measures under\u00a0Stage-I, II and III\u00a0of GRAP.
