The United States has officially confirmed that India will join\u00a0Pax Silica, its flagship economic security and technology coalition, in February 2026 \u2014 marking what Washington describes as a historic expansion of the alliance into the world\u2019s largest democracy.\u00a0<\/p>

US Under Secretary of State for Economic Affairs\u00a0Jacob Helberg\u00a0made the announcement on January 29 while speaking at the\u00a0Hudson Institute, underscoring India\u2019s growing role in the global semiconductor and artificial intelligence supply chain.\u00a0<\/p>

\u201cWe look forward to welcoming India next month,\u201d Helberg said, noting that while the\u00a0initial\u00a0core of Pax Silica focused on advanced manufacturing hubs such as\u00a0Japan and South Korea, India\u2019s inclusion is essential to securing the broader supply chain \u2014 from\u00a0critical minerals\u00a0to\u00a0AI infrastructure.\u00a0<\/p>

Launched in\u00a0December 2025, Pax Silica is a US-led initiative aimed at safeguarding the global semiconductor and AI ecosystem and reducing dependence on non-aligned or adversarial nations. The alliance currently includes the\u00a0United States, Japan, South Korea, Israel, Australia, Singapore, and the United Kingdom, with\u00a0Qatar and the United Arab Emirates\u00a0joining shortly after the\u00a0initial\u00a0signing.\u00a0<\/p>

Helberg described the effort as an expanding coalition of \u201ccapable partners,\u201d moving beyond the traditional Western bloc to include key powers in the Middle East and South Asia.\u00a0<\/p>

\u201cWe\u2019re rapidly expanding this coalition of capable partners,\u201d he said. \u201cAs we grow, we will create\u00a0functional working groups\u00a0that leverage each partner country\u2019s unique expertise \u2014 ensuring our work remains tangible and focused on results, not dialogue for its own sake.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>

He cited examples such as\u00a0Dutch lithography,\u00a0Taiwanese fabrication, and\u00a0Indian software, signalling that India\u2019s vast engineering talent pool and emerging hardware manufacturing ecosystem are central to its induction.\u00a0<\/p>

Helberg framed Pax Silica as a response to what he called the \u201cweaponisation\u201d of technology supply chains in an era of intensifying global competition.\u00a0<\/p>

\u201cThis AI race is a fundamental struggle for the architecture of the 21st century,\u201d he said. \u201cDependency is being used as a leash, and supply chains of the AI revolution are being turned into tools of political coercion.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>

According to Helberg, Pax Silica\u00a0operates\u00a0along three broad tracks \u2014 membership, policy, and projects \u2014 with a focus on aligning export controls, investment screening, and R&D subsidies to ensure trusted technologies do not leak to adversaries.\u00a0<\/p>

In a post on X, Helberg said India\u2019s entry marked \u201ca decisive shift toward reliable and secure supply chains,\u201d calling it a historic moment for the US-India partnership.\u00a0<\/p>

Pax Silica\u2019s mandate spans\u00a0semiconductors, advanced manufacturing, AI infrastructure, critical minerals, energy inputs, and\u00a0logistics, reflecting a broader shift in US economic policy toward proactive coalition-building rather than reactive market interventions.<\/p>
