While the immediate focus\u00a0remains\u00a0military, the deeper shockwaves may travel through global energy markets.\u00a0<\/p> <p lang=\"EN-GB\" paraeid=\"{ab1c4d46-bfcf-41ae-94a8-f4d25e4eafaa}{35}\" paraid=\"1629947978\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\">Iran holds the world\u2019s third-largest proven oil reserves, estimated at 208-209 billion barrels as of 2024-25. That accounts for\u00a0roughly 12%\u00a0of global reserves and\u00a0nearly a\u00a0quarter of the Middle East\u2019s total. Despite years of sanctions and constrained foreign investment, the country\u00a0remains\u00a0a pivotal supplier in a tightly balanced oil market.\u00a0<\/p> <p aria-level=\"3\" lang=\"EN-GB\" paraeid=\"{ab1c4d46-bfcf-41ae-94a8-f4d25e4eafaa}{40}\" paraid=\"946452249\" role=\"heading\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\"><strong>Production, exports &amp; strategic weight\u00a0<\/strong><\/p> <p lang=\"EN-GB\" paraeid=\"{ab1c4d46-bfcf-41ae-94a8-f4d25e4eafaa}{46}\" paraid=\"1524472402\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\">Iran currently produces around 3.3 to 3.5 million barrels per day (bpd) of crude \u2014\u00a0roughly 3%\u00a0of global supply \u2014 along with about 1.3 million bpd of condensate and other liquids. As the third-largest producer in OPEC, it contributes about 4.5% of global oil supplies.\u00a0<\/p> <p lang=\"EN-GB\" paraeid=\"{ab1c4d46-bfcf-41ae-94a8-f4d25e4eafaa}{51}\" paraid=\"1056560981\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\">At its peak in 1974, Iran was pumping\u00a0nearly six\u00a0million bpd, second only to the United States and Saudi Arabia at the time. Production has since fallen to about 3.1 million bpd, according to OPEC data, but the country\u00a0remains\u00a0a significant force in energy markets.\u00a0<\/p> <p lang=\"EN-GB\" paraeid=\"{ab1c4d46-bfcf-41ae-94a8-f4d25e4eafaa}{56}\" paraid=\"1231306590\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\">Sanctions have curbed its ability to sell freely, yet Iran continues to export an estimated 1.3 to 1.5 million bpd of crude, with the majority heading to China. In 2023, its net oil export revenues were estimated at $53 billion, up from $37 billion in 2021. While Iran\u2019s economy is more diversified than some Gulf peers, oil\u00a0remains\u00a0a critical source of government income.\u00a0<\/p> <p lang=\"EN-GB\" paraeid=\"{ab1c4d46-bfcf-41ae-94a8-f4d25e4eafaa}{61}\" paraid=\"593582798\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\">Iran\u2019s domestic refining capacity stands at about 2.6 million bpd, according to consultancy FGE. In 2025, it exported\u00a0nearly 820,000\u00a0bpd of fuel products, including LPG, slightly below 2024 levels.\u00a0<\/p> <p aria-level=\"3\" lang=\"EN-GB\" paraeid=\"{ab1c4d46-bfcf-41ae-94a8-f4d25e4eafaa}{66}\" paraid=\"442847975\" role=\"heading\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\"><strong>Concentrated infrastructure, strategic vulnerabilities\u00a0<\/strong><\/p> <p lang=\"EN-GB\" paraeid=\"{ab1c4d46-bfcf-41ae-94a8-f4d25e4eafaa}{72}\" paraid=\"1148652056\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\">Iran\u2019s oil production is heavily concentrated in its southwestern province of Khuzestan, home to major onshore fields including Ahvaz,\u00a0Gachsaran, Marun, Agha Jari, Bibi Hakimeh and\u00a0Karanj. Offshore, key fields such as Abuzar,\u00a0Foroozan,\u00a0Doroud\u00a0and Salman\u00a0are located in\u00a0the Gulf, some shared with Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.\u00a0<\/p> <p lang=\"EN-GB\" paraeid=\"{ab1c4d46-bfcf-41ae-94a8-f4d25e4eafaa}{77}\" paraid=\"1226879764\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\">Nearly 90%\u00a0of Iran\u2019s crude exports leave through Kharg Island, passing via the Strait of Hormuz \u2014 a narrow maritime corridor that has become the focal point of global concern.\u00a0<\/p> <p lang=\"EN-GB\" paraeid=\"{ab1c4d46-bfcf-41ae-94a8-f4d25e4eafaa}{82}\" paraid=\"1387472412\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\">Key refineries include Abadan \u2014 one of the oldest and largest in the Middle East \u2014 along with Tehran, Isfahan, Bandar Abbas,\u00a0Arak\u00a0and Tabriz, which process crude for domestic use and export.\u00a0<\/p> <p aria-level=\"3\" lang=\"EN-GB\" paraeid=\"{ab1c4d46-bfcf-41ae-94a8-f4d25e4eafaa}{87}\" paraid=\"624991028\" role=\"heading\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\"><strong>Lessons from past conflicts\u00a0<\/strong><\/p> <p lang=\"EN-GB\" paraeid=\"{ab1c4d46-bfcf-41ae-94a8-f4d25e4eafaa}{93}\" paraid=\"230485292\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\">Energy infrastructure has long been entangled in regional conflict. Spare capacity from producers such as Saudi Arabia helped cushion the blow.\u00a0<\/p> <p lang=\"EN-GB\" paraeid=\"{ab1c4d46-bfcf-41ae-94a8-f4d25e4eafaa}{98}\" paraid=\"1077986305\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\">More recently, the 2019 strike on Saudi Arabia\u2019s Abqaiq processing facility \u2014 widely attributed to Iran \u2014 temporarily knocked out 5.7 million bpd and triggered a sharp spike in crude prices. Saudi Aramco restored output within weeks by drawing on inventory buffers and rerouting supply, which helped prices retreat.\u00a0<\/p> <p lang=\"EN-GB\" paraeid=\"{ab1c4d46-bfcf-41ae-94a8-f4d25e4eafaa}{103}\" paraid=\"613134100\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\">Those episodes underline a key market dynamic: disruption does not have to be permanent to move prices. Even temporary outages or credible threats can trigger volatility.\u00a0<\/p> <p aria-level=\"3\" lang=\"EN-GB\" paraeid=\"{ab1c4d46-bfcf-41ae-94a8-f4d25e4eafaa}{108}\" paraid=\"1813545751\" role=\"heading\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\"><strong>The Strait of Hormuz: The bigger risk\u00a0<\/strong><\/p> <p lang=\"EN-GB\" paraeid=\"{ab1c4d46-bfcf-41ae-94a8-f4d25e4eafaa}{114}\" paraid=\"1725946139\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\">Roughly 20\u00a0million barrels of oil pass through the strait each day, accounting for nearly one-fifth of global consumption, according to the US Energy Information Administration. Even without a full blockade, the risk of confrontation can drive up tanker insurance premiums, slow shipping, and create supply bottlenecks.
