An Iranian lawmaker has sharply criticised President Masoud Pezeshkian over his televised apology to neighbouring countries, calling the remarks \u201cweak, unprofessional, and unacceptable\u201d and urging clerical authorities to move quickly to appoint Iran\u2019s next Supreme Leader.\u00a0<\/p>

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Hamid Rasai, a hardline cleric and lawmaker, rebuked Pezeshkian\u2019s comments made during a national address on March 7, arguing that the president\u2019s tone undermined the country\u2019s armed forces amid the ongoing regional conflict involving Iran,\u00a0Israel\u00a0and the United States.\u00a0<\/p>

\u201cMr. Pezeshkian! Your stance was astonishing, unprofessional, weak, and unacceptable,\u201d the lawmaker wrote. \u201cThe armed forces did not act with \u2018fire at will\u2019 and without\u00a0coordination, but\u00a0rather carried\u00a0out their reciprocal response based on deterrence policy, fulfilling their duty admirably.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>

The MP added that the countries hosting American military forces \u2014 not Tehran \u2014 should be the ones offering apologies. \u201cThose who should apologize are the countries that have turned their soil into a base for the US military,\u201d the post said.\u00a0<\/p>

In a follow-up post he wrote, \u201cDear Mr. Arafi, Dear Mr. Mohseni Eje’i, Please clearly and transparently state whether Mr. Pezeshkian’s positions in the television interview, which he announced on behalf of the Interim Leadership Council, are also endorsed by you or not? If not, officially announce it.\u201d<\/p>

Mohammad Mannan Raeesi, another hardliner lawmaker, condemned the “humiliating” apology.<\/p>

What the Iranian President said<\/strong><\/p>

The criticism came shortly after Pezeshkian publicly apologised to neighbouring states for Iranian attacks carried out during the escalating conflict. Speaking in remarks broadcast on Iranian state television, the president sought to reassure governments across the region that Tehran does not intend to target neighbouring countries unless they are used as launch points for attacks on Iran.\u00a0<\/p>

\u201cI apologise\u2026 to the neighbouring countries that were attacked by Iran,\u201d Pezeshkian said during the address.\u00a0<\/p>

He emphasised that Tehran has adopted a policy of avoiding missile strikes against regional states unless attacks against Iran originate from their territory.\u00a0<\/p>

\u201cIran will not carry out attacks or missile strikes against neighbouring countries unless an attack against Iran originates from those countries,\u201d Pezeshkian said.\u00a0<\/p>

Pezeshkian also noted that the policy had been approved by Iran\u2019s interim leadership council\u00a0in an effort to\u00a0prevent the conflict from spreading further across the Middle East.\u00a0<\/p>

In his post, the Iranian MP also called on the Assembly of Experts \u2014 the clerical body responsible for appointing the country\u2019s Supreme Leader \u2014 to end the current temporary leadership council and swiftly select Iran\u2019s next top leader, warning that delays could deepen political uncertainty during a period of heightened regional tensions.\u00a0<\/p>

Trump claims Iran \u2018apologised and surrendered\u2019\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>

Meanwhile, Donald Trump claimed that Iran had \u201capologised and surrendered\u201d to its Middle Eastern neighbours following sustained military pressure from the United States and Israel, while warning that Tehran could face even harsher attacks.\u00a0<\/p>

In a post on Truth Social on March 7, Trump said Iran had promised neighbouring states it would no longer target them with attacks. \u201cIran, which is being beat to HELL, has apologized and surrendered to its Middle East\u00a0neighbors, and promised that it will not shoot at them anymore,\u201d he wrote, attributing the move to \u201crelentless US and Israeli attack.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>

Trump further claimed Tehran had ambitions to dominate the region but had now been forced to back down. \u201cThey were looking to take over and rule the Middle East. It is the first time that Iran has ever lost, in thousands of years, to surrounding Middle Eastern countries,\u201d he said.\u00a0The US President also asserted that regional states had thanked him for the pressure campaign against Iran.<\/p> <\/div>
