Mueller called it a big hammer and cautioned about using it.<\/p> <h2>.XYZ TLD Spam<\/h2> <p>Someone on Bluesky asked a question about a client that was receiving a lot of strange links from the .XYZ domain and Google\u2019s Mueller encouraged the person to go ahead and upload a disavow file if it makes them feel better about the situation. But he also mentioned that the entire .XYZ TLD can be disavowed, too.<\/p> <h2>Link Disavow Domain Directive<\/h2> <p><em>Mueller wrote:<\/em><\/p> <blockquote> <p>\u201cIf you notice that the bulk of the problems are from a few TLDs, you can also disavow the whole TLD. The disavow file is a tool, not a religion :-). Most sites don\u2019t need it, but that\u2019s not all sites.\u201d<\/p> <\/blockquote> <p>The person who asked the original question asked Mueller how to format that kind of full-TLD banning.<\/p> <p><em>Mueller responded:<\/em><\/p> <blockquote> <p>\u201cIt\u2019s the domain: directive, I don\u2019t know if it\u2019s explicitly called out for the whole TLD in the documentation (it\u2019s quite a big hammer :-)). It\u2019s been possible since the start, but I imagine the \u201cannoying\u201d TLDs change over the years. Some TLDs are very cheap, and have \u201cfriendly\u201d TOSs\u2026\u201d<\/p> <\/blockquote> <p>This apparently isn\u2019t something that\u2019s well known and Glenn Gabe responded to note that he didn\u2019t believe it was in Google\u2019s documentation.<\/p> <p>Mueller essentially confirmed that it\u2019s not a documented capability because it\u2019s quite powerful.<\/p> <p><em>He explained:<\/em><\/p> <blockquote> <p>\u201cGiven how big of a hammer it is, I don\u2019t know if it\u2019s something we should really suggest in the docs. I\u2019m sure all TLDs have some good sites. (It has come up a few times\u201d\u2026)<\/p> <\/blockquote> <p>Someone else asked if that\u2019s really an option and Mueller responded:<\/p> <blockquote> <p>\u201cYes. If you\u2019re sure that it\u2019s what you want to do, you can use \u201cdomain:abc\u201d in the disavow file.
