Addressing women across the country, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he has come to speak directly to them, while acknowledging concerns around their progress and opportunities.<\/p>
\u201cToday I have come to talk to the women of India,\u201d he said, adding that \u201cAll Indian citizens are seeing how Indian women’s flight was curbed.\u201d<\/p>
In a notable remark, he said, \u201cI apologies to all the women of India,\u201d while linking the situation to political priorities overtaking broader national goals.<\/p>
\u201cFor us, our country is everything. But when, for some people, party politics becomes bigger than everything, the country and women’s empowerment have to bear the cost. That is what happened this time,\u201d he said.<\/p>
\u201cDespite our best efforts, we haven’t succeeded. Amendments could not be made in the Nari Shakti Adhiniyam. And I apologise to all the mothers and sisters of the nation for this,\u201d he said.<\/p>
\u201cThe country\u2019s \u2018Nari Shakti\u2019 had to bear the burden of the selfish politics of parties like Congress, DMK, TMC and Samajwadi Party,\u201d the PM said while criticising the Opposition.\u00a0<\/p>
Continuing his sharp attack, Narendra Modi said women across the country will not forget what he described as an \u201cinsult\u201d by the opposition.<\/p>
\u201cA woman forgets everything, but not her insult; This insult by Congress and its allies will always remain in every woman’s heart,\u201d he said, directly targeting Indian National Congress and its partners.<\/p>
He further accused the Congress of a legacy of resisting reforms while in power. \u201cCongress has always spread falsehoods about necessary reforms, delayed every reform, while it ruled,\u201d he said.<\/p>
Escalating his criticism, Modi alleged that the party has relied on divisive narratives. \u201cCongress has always believed in politics of dividing people, so they spread falsehood about North-South divide,\u201d he said.<\/p>
On the issue of women\u2019s reservation, the Prime Minister took aim at regional and family-led political outfits, suggesting their opposition is politically motivated. \u201cFamily-run parties do not want women to move forward as women could end their selfish politics,\u201d he said.<\/p>
Calling the development deeply disappointing, Narendra Modi said, \u201cDreams of women have been crushed,\u201d while also offering an apology. \u201cI apologise to all the mothers and sisters of the country,\u201d he stated, blaming what he described as \u201cselfish\u201d political interests for derailing the legislation.<\/p>
According to him, the proposal was a long-overdue measure aimed at securing representation for half of India\u2019s population, delayed for decades.<\/p>
Referring to the events in Parliament, the Prime Minister alleged that opposition leaders had reacted insensitively. \u201cWhen the bill was defeated, these dynastic parties were clapping,\u201d he said, accusing them of celebrating the denial of women\u2019s rights. He escalated his criticism further, remarking, \u201copposition will be punished for their sins\u201d and describing the defeat as \u201cfoeticide of an honest effort.\u201d<\/p>
Calling the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam a \u201cgreat yajna\u201d aimed at empowering women in the 21st century, the Prime Minister said the government had assured from the outset that no state would lose representation during delimitation.<\/p>
He further claimed that Opposition parties refused to heed the government\u2019s assurances, accusing their leaders of misleading their own supporters and ignoring the Centre\u2019s commitment to a uniform increase in Lok Sabha seats.<\/p>
PM Modi emphasised that the amendment was intended as a sincere step toward empowerment. \u201cThis amendment was meant to grant women their long-pending rights, delayed for 40 years, starting from the next Lok Sabha elections in 2029. This was for the rights of 50% of the population of India. It was an honest effort, a pure one,\u201d he said.<\/p>
The bill ultimately failed to secure the required two-thirds majority, with 298 members voting in favor and 230 against.<\/p> <\/div>
